Child Passenger Safety Seats

Per Code of Virginia § 46.2-1095 children ages 8 years and under are required to be secured in a child restraint device, i.e. a child safety or booster seat. To aide in the proper installation and use of child safety seats the Virginia Tech Police Department participates in the Virginia Department of Health Child Passenger Safety program, providing the services of certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technicians.

Child Safety Seat Installations

This service is open to the general public free of charge.

To have a seat checked simply bring your vehicle and the seat to be installed to our station, located in the Sterrett Facilities Complex, at: 230 Sterrett Drive (0523), Blacksburg, VA 24061

Over 127 seats installed in 2011!

To check technician availability please call our communications center any time, at 540-231-6411. Walk-ins are welcome, though technician availability cannot be guaranteed.

CPS technicians can do more than just install a seat for you! CPS technicians are trained to inspect seat and vehicle specifications and condition in order to advise and teach parents and family members how to safely install and maintain their safety seat. Technicians also check for recalls and defects, and can provide advise on many child passenger safety issues.

Buckle Up Parents! Children are 63% more likely to use a seat belt if you do.

Events and Presentations

Care to host a seat check event or a presentation on Child Passenger Safety? CPS technicians are available to check seats or provide presentations at community events and localities, such as nurseries, social clubs, churches, etc. Contact Dietrich Traub, the department's CPS Coordinator, to discuss your options.
