Pedestrian Safety
Pedestrian involved motor vehicle crashes represent 10% of all traffic fatalities each year in Virginia*. Stay alert when crossing roads and be mindful of your surroundings. Be aware of whether motorist will be able to see you in time to stop, especially when emerging between parked cars, after stepping off a bus, or around sharp turns in a road.
Being mindful of your surroundings is just as important for cyclist, too. Cyclists are especially vulnerable when crossing roads, since their reaction time to approaching vehicles is slowed by having to dismount their bicycle. Unless traveling inline with traffic, cyclist should always walk their bicycle across the road.
